Our Raised Garden Beds 2024

Farrissey Farm

BACK TO THE ROOTS

We’ve set out to turn our 1-acre lot into a thriving market garden, growing fresh, nutrient-rich produce using organic, no-till farming practices. Committed to sustainability and soil health, we’re excited to share our journey as we get back to the roots.

Our Journey

  • Transforming Our Yard

The first step in our journey was expanding beyond our 7 raised beds. It was time to transform a 10x100 ft section of lawn into 30-inch no-till beds. This is our first big leap toward growing more food and connecting deeper with the land. We’re excited for what this next phase will bring in our journey!

  • Working with clay

One of our biggest challenges has been working with the heavy, compact clay soil we have. Our clay is why we've relied mainly on raised beds until now. We're committed to avoiding heavy machinery and sticking to no-till practices to maintain soil health. Stay tuned for more tips on working with clay soil!

  • Investing in our soil

Working with clay soil is a challenge—its dense, compact nature makes it hard for roots to thrive. To create the ideal soil structure for our no-till market garden, we're planting winter rye as a cover crop over 4 inches of compost. This is our first step toward improving aeration, moisture retention, and promoting healthy microbes.
